Angela Spence-Shaw Murder Story: Who Killed Her?

Angela Spence-Shaw, 66 years old from North London who moved to the United States, was found dead in her bathroom from signs of a brutal assault, rape, drowning, and blunt force trauma. An autopsy report showed she had been severely beaten before being left with a hairdryer in the bathroom. Though there were no indications of a robbery, there were bloodstains on the mattress, floor, and carpet, which police later identified as semen.

Detectives discovered Angela had a construction crew at her home during the renovation, providing an ideal window of opportunity for burglary. Police interrogated all those involved, including 23-year-old carpenter Jeremy M. Motyka (23), who worked at Angela’s house when it occurred. On May 28, 1999, Patricia Rogalin and their son left Massachusetts while Jeremy stayed behind in Florida. On May 29th they had several phone conversations the following day, but Jeremy was last seen drinking with friends in a garden area at 1:30 am on May 29th. On May 30th, Jeremy returned to Cape Cod but spent all day sick in bed due to illness.

Police interviewed Jeremy on May 29 and discovered he had worked until 3 p.m., drunk beer at home until midnight, and then spent time with a group of youngsters. Jeremy insisted he slept from midnight on May 30 until 8:30 the following morning; however, inconsistencies emerged when describing going to a pub after work on May 29 and staying until 6 p.m. during another follow-up interview; thereafter, Jeremy claimed to have ordered pizza and eaten it at home as well. Finally, fearing police searching for footprints, Patricia asked to bring along his shoes since they would look for tracks. A witness reported seeing Jeremy express worry about being identified as the killer during this second interview session.

Angela Spence-Shaw was a single mother of two and an enthusiastic gardener, painter, and bird watcher. She lived in Little Compton, Rhode Island, worked at a greenhouse, and volunteered to help those less fortunate. To this day, her murder remains unsolved, and an investigation is ongoing.

What Happened to Jeremy Motyka

After conclusive biological evidence surfaced, Jeremy M. Motyka was identified as the perpetrator of Angela Spence-Shaw’s rape and murder. Despite his assertion that they had sexually interacted in Angela’s bathroom before going to work, Patricia denied they ever did so in the morning. On February 2001, Jeremy Motyka was found guilty and given a life sentence without parole; he is currently being held at a maximum-security facility in Cranston, Providence County, Rhode Island.
