‘The Night Agent’ Short Review
Matthew Quirk’s 2019 novel is the foundation for the series, The Night Agent. The plot revolves around FBI agent Peter Sutherland, who is determined to clear his father’s name after he was falsely accused of being involved in a metro bombing. Gabriel Basso plays the lead character, while Diane Farr (Hong Chau), the president’s chief of staff, assigns Sutherland to light desk duty in the White House basement as a peace offering. Nonetheless, things take a dangerous turn when Sutherland, while responding to a night action call, is on the run with cybersecurity expert Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan), whose aunt and uncle were brutally killed.
The series is a high-octane action-thriller that keeps viewers on edge with its constantly changing backdrop, including the president (Kari Matchett), the vice president (Christopher Shyer), his daughter Maddie (Sarah Desjardins), and other members of the FBI. Although The Night Agent may share some similarities with The Recruit, where a low-level CIA operative finds himself in dangerous situations, the former outshines the latter with a more grounded storyline and well-developed characters.
The series also highlights an exceptional supporting cast, including assassins Ellen and Dale, who add humor and intensity to the show. Basso and Buchanan dominate the screen with their powerful performances, while Chau, known for her roles in The Whale, The Menu, and Poker Face, stands out as a problem-solver with a tense demeanor.
Secret Service agents Chelsea Arrington and Erik Monks team up against their better judgement to safeguard the Vice President’s daughter, portrayed perfectly by Desjardins. As the plot thickens, both the characters and the audience are left wondering who to trust, especially when the clues lead to the White House.
The Night Agent is a thrilling series that ups the stakes, feels more grounded in reality, and takes itself more seriously than The Recruit. Although there are times when viewers may prefer to watch the charming Noah Centineo take on the bad guys, The Night Agent is an excellent choice for those who seek a more intense and captivating storyline.
