What Happened to Katrina Brownlee? Where is She Now?

Katrina Cooke Brownlee was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. At 18 years old, she met Alex Irvin – a corrections officer at Rikers Island – and fell in love with him. As a single mother at that time, Brownlee hoped Irvin would provide stability for her daughter; however, after their daughter was born, he began abusing Brownlee, which continued for years despite multiple reports to authorities regarding his behaviour as a police officer. Despite multiple attempts at taking action against him due to his official position within the system, no action was taken against him due to law enforcement officials’ employment.

Brownlee left Irvin when she was 22 and moved into a nearby motel with her two daughters. But on January 9, 1993, Irvin was already waiting for her when she returned home to retrieve some personal belongings. He shot Brownlee multiple times, ultimately leading to the loss of her five-month-pregnant child and leaving her with six bullets permanently lodged inside her body.

After Brownlee’s recovery, she spent time in homeless shelters with her daughters before joining the NYPD. She desired to help those facing similar circumstances where the police department failed them and take action instead. After graduating from their academy in 2001, Brownlee held various positions such as Community Affairs, Mayor’s Security Detail, and Investigations until retiring in 2021 as a first-grade investigator.

Katrina Brownlee’s abusive ex-fiance, Alex Irvin, was caught and prosecuted for shooting her ten times in 1993. He was found guilty of attempted murder in the second degree, assault, and unlawful firearm use. Sentenced to 15 years in prison, Irvin was granted parole after serving only five years; currently working in the healthcare solutions sector out of North Carolina.

Brownlee also became a life coach and founded the Young Ladies of Our Future program to assist troubled teenagers. Her faith in God gave her the strength to overcome significant challenges; through it all, Brownlee has dedicated her life to serving others.
